Following yet another power outage at NAIA 3 last Friday (Jun 9), the issues of the country’s main airport are becoming more obvious that Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile calls them out–and wants all MIAA officials to be fired.

“The apology should not be accepted. Fire all of them and replace them with people more sensitive to their reputation and sensitive to their job and sensitive to the plight of the public,” Enrile said in his TV program. MIAA OIC Bryan Co apologized for the power outage that occurred last June 9.

This is the third time this year a power outage affected NAIA’s operations: the first one was during New Year, and the second one was during Labor Day. Both incidents affected multiple flights and passengers, with the New Year incident affecting over 56,000 passengers.

Continuing with his sentiments on the recent issues that NAIA is facing, Enrile said that all of the current MIAA officials should be replaced by those who are “more sensitive” to the plight of the people.

“When you enter public service, you must swear that you will faithfully discharge your duties, the powers of the position that you are given, and all others that you will get or receive in the government,” Enrile said in a mix of English and Filipino.

The DOTR has plans to improve NAIA, and among them is the privatization of the airport, which they see it happening by the first quarter of 2024–despite critics stating that privatization is not a cure-all solution.
