Fortnite Developer Claims Victory Against Google

Fortnite developer Epic Games gained an important win, as it claimed victory against Google for its alleged monopoly with its Play Store.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney is ecstatic with the win, posting on Twitter/X that he’s thanking “everyone’s support and faith”.

(Today’s verdict) proves that Google’s app store practices are illegal and they abuse their monopoly to extract exorbitant fees, stifle competition, and reduce innovation,” Epic Games said in their statement.

The case between Epic Games and Google stems from the latter being accused of charging fees as high as 30% to app developers, and that Google obliges developers to use both Play Store and its billing services to have their apps included in Google’s app store.

This court case win against Google is much needed for Epic Games, which is bleeding from losses with its own Epic Games Store in its push to be another game store to rival the likes of Steam. Epic Games Store has been online since 2018, and the developer has yet to turn a profit from it.

Should this ruling be upheld, developers will have more freedom on how they intend to distribute their apps and how they can profit from them without any middleman. This means that developers can choose to not use Google or Apple’s app store platforms to distribute their apps.

Epic Games is halfway through with its win against Google, as they have yet to settle their antitrust case against Apple for the same reasons. Apple is fighting hard against the case, and it remains to be seen if the judges will also be in favor of Epic Games again.
