Avid Spotify users are familiar with the heart button. This button basically tells Spotify that you like the song–and that it gets saved to your library. For 2023, Spotify is tweaking its heart button, changing it to a plus (+) button instead.

The tweak is not just cosmetic: Spotify explained in their blog that the plus button will have two functions: a single tap lets you save the song or podcast to your library while tapping it again (where it transforms to a green check) lets you add that song to your playlist of choice.

“This upgrade is the latest step in our ongoing work to create a more intuitive experience—all leading to an easier way for you to engage with the music and podcasts you love,” Spotify explains.

While the plus button feels more generic than the original heart icon, Sptofiy aims to streamline its UI to make it more intuitive to its users. After all, one of Spotify’s main strengths as a music streaming platform is how its UI makes it easy for users to create playlists and discover new music along the way.

“In our user research, we found that the Plus (+) button upgrade helped save time and gave users the ability to add to multiple playlists at once,” Spotify adds.

The updated plus icon will roll out globally first for iOS and Android users and will become available to all Spotify users in the coming weeks.
