Gadgets that Got us Through the 90’s

The 90’s is the coolest decade ever! That’s a fact … at least for the 90’s kids and every 90’s kid owned at least one of these gadgets that got us through the decade.

#1 Pager

Remember having one of those tiny things you clip on to your belt; calling the operator to leave a message and if you’re the one on the receiving end, having to look for a pay phone to respond? #TheStruggleIsReal but heck, it didn’t matter because only cool kids had pagers back then.

#2 Nokia 5110

Suddenly, pagers were out and cellphones were in. Actually, one particular unit was the ultimate statement piece – the Nokia 5110. Launched in 1998, the 5110 caused a craze. It was a tank! It never claimed to be water resistant or shock proof – it just was. Drop it, wet it and chances are, it will still work like new. The best part was its changeable case so just like shoes, you can match your phone with your #OOTD (not that the term even existed back then). Oh, and the Snake game. Nuff said.

#3 Walkman or Discman

This is the lifeline of every Nirvana, Britney Spears, Spice Girls and BSB fan. Leaving home without it is out of the question. Of course, it is every walkman owner’s dilemma when the unit “eats” the cassette tape or when a song skips when you hit a bump while listening to your disc.

#4 Game Boy

Nintendo’s 3DS and PlayStation Vita owe a lot to its predecessor, the Game Boy. It made portable gaming popular with its many cool games – some of which we still know and play today using a different console. The first Pokemon game was released for the Game Boy in 1998; The Legend of Zelda in 1993. There were also Donkey Kong, Super Mario, Mega Man and many more.

#5 VHS or VCD

Before Netflix and iFlix, people actually had to rent VHS or VCDs in this magical place called Video City. If you feel like watching your favorite 90’s flicks and rewatching your favorite scenes, the rewind button is your best friend. VCDs were pretty neat too but you better make sure to not scratch them.

Bonus: Tamagotchi

This virtual pet on a keychain was part of the 90’s lifestyle. Just like actual pets, they had to be fed, bathed and taken care of. Being a Tamagotchi parent was a full time job and just like actual pet owners sharing #petstagram photos, they too were proud pet mommies and daddies.
