As it improves its efforts to block spam text messages, especially those with clickable links, Globe blocks a total 32.2 million spam text messages from September 28 to October 13, covering two weeks. This accounts for 2.4 million spam text messages with clickable links blocked per day.
“The amount of text messages with clickable links we blocked within just about two weeks shows the staggering number of spam and scam SMS that disrupt and threaten customers every day. This is empirical proof that our security measure was warranted,” Globe Chief Information Security Officer Anton Bonifacio said.
To recall, Globe joined other telcos last September in the push for blocking spam text messages that contain clickable URLs, as these text messages contain phishing links. Globe is proud to say that they are serious about this effort in proactively blocking all person-to-person spam text messages with clickable links.
To date, Globe has blocked 1.3 billion spam text messages from January to the end of September, exceeding the 1.15 billion spam text messages that were blocked in 2021. With this new effort to block all spam text messages with clickable links, fraudsters are scrambling in finding new ways to victimize people with spam.
“We reiterate our call on our customers to remain vigilant as fraudsters will continue to find ways to circumvent measures that aim to thwart them. Do not engage with SMS from anonymous sources making enticing offers,” Bonifacio adds.
As Globe blocks more spam text messages, the telco giant also has campaigned in protecting its customers. These include an instructional video to teach Android users how to install spam filters on their devices and a Digital Thumbprint Program that has modules to help students, teachers, and parents be responsible digital citizens.
