Google CEO Thinks AI Can Be Used For Search

While Google is part of the AI race with its development of Gemini, CEO Sundar Pichai thinks that Google Search itself will be utilizing AI in how it will deliver information to Search users.

“As AI continues to expand the universe of queries that people can ask, 2025 is going to be one of the biggest years for search innovation yet,” said Pichai during his opening remarks at Google’s Earning Call last February 4.

The plan is to add AI features to Google Search to slowly make it an AI assistant that checks the internet for you, look at web pages, and give you a more comprehensive answer than it’s current iteration where it gives you 10 links. You’re probably thinking that with this push, there might be an overlap between Search and Gemini—you can also do search queries on the latter. However, the argument for adding AI to Google Search should help on its traffic and businesses better—especially with ads.

Pichai also mentioned that they are looking at different ways to add AI to Search, utilizing Project Astra and Gemini Deep Research in supporting its businesses. The latter looks to be a better fit for Search, as to make Google Search a more powerful tool that will help users with research work.

“You are really dramatically expanding the types of use cases for which Search can work—things which don’t always get answered instantaneously, but can take some time to answer,” Pichai adds. “Those are all areas of exploration, and you will see us putting new experiences in front of users through the course of 2025.”

To an extent, Google is pressured to improve Search as ChatGPT has matured into one of the internet’s most used products—making it a big threat to Google Search’s business. Google’s push to add AI to Search had its fair share of challenges: upon rolling out AI Overviews, it display inaccurate information that includes telling people to eat rocks and put glue on their pizza. Despite the setback, Google is commited to make AI a much-needed boost for Search.
