HONOR Magic Vs Gets Dissected: A Closer Look at its Hinge

The Honor Magic Vs gets dissected–and while it didn’t survive, it’s interesting to see the inner workings of its hinge mechanism.

One of the things that HONOR is proud of about its Magic Vs foldable is that it utilizes a simplified hinge that uses fewer parts and still pulls off a gapless design when folded. To be specific, the hinge of the Magic Vs reduced the number of parts for the hinge from 92 individual parts to just 4, which made Jerryrigeverything curious enough to dissect the phone and examine that hinge.

While the Magic Vs obviously did not survive the dissection (spoiler alert: the flexible OLED display died when was peeled off from the frame), the main star of the show is how HONOR designed the gapless hinge to have fewer individual parts.

Despite that the flexible inner display died during the dissection process, Jerryrigeverything noted that the area where the hinge is has titanium slats to keep the display durable after multiple folds–HONOR claims that the Magic Vs has been tested for over 400,000 folds.

With over 50 screws (and a few dust caps) needed to remove in order to gain access to the hinge, HONOR’s approach to the Magic Vs’ hinge is different from the Galaxy Z Fold4 since it does not make use of gears. Instead, HONOR fused the metal hinge mechanism to an aerospace-grade plastic in the middle, simplifying the whole design and making it significantly lighter than the previous hinge design on the Magic V.

To hold the Magic Vs in both open and closed positions, the hinge has multiple sets of springs that function similarly to a car suspension. All of those springs inside the hinge ensure that force is distributed evenly across the two halves of the phone.

HONOR’s simplified approach to the Magic Vs’ hinge is a positive step in making foldable phones more affordable, and we’re looking forward to see more of them later this year.
