While panic was induced when CapCut was banned for several hours in the US (along with other ByteDance-owned apps like TikTok), Meta took on the opportunity to introduce their own video editor called Edits for Instagram reels.
Currently on pre-order at the Apple App Store and expected to go live in March, Instagram Edits will also be available in Android soon according to head Adam Mosseri. It’s going to be a free app, though it remains to be seen if it will have a subscription like CapCut.
Based on the screencaps provided in the App Store listing, it’s clear that Edits wants to copy practically everything that CapCut has to offer. Aside from a linear editing timeline, Edits will allow to shoot vertical videos on the app at up to 2K60 resolution–with an option for shooting in HDR and up to 10 minutes long.
Like CapCut, Edits also has a project manager within the app, along with access to insights and analytics that looks similar to what’s available in Business Suite. There’s also a tab for checking for trends, inspiration, and what’s popular within the app.
From what we’re seeing so far, Edits is basically a CapCut copycat, and we’ll have to wait until March to see how it is different from TikTok’s own video editor.
