Really terrible people are taking advantage of the panic

As if society didn’t already have their hands full with the current Wuhan Coronavirus scare, digital security experts Kaspersky confirmed that malware using the global health emergency is spreading online.

The malicious files are masquerading as documents and video clips about the current virus scare, promising tips, updates and exclusive video of the situation on the ground in Wuhan, China.

The files are actually programs that can infect your PC, steal personal data or erase files.

“So far we have seen only 10 unique files, but as this sort of activity often happens with popular media topics, we expect that this tendency may grow,” said Kaspersky malware analysts Anton Ivanov in an email to Tom’s Guide.

“As people continue to be worried about their health, we may see more and more malware hidden inside fake documents about the coronavirus being spread.”

The best protection moving forward? Do not open suspicious links you see on the web and make sure to only go to legitimate sources of information about the Coronavirus like the World Health Organization, WHO Situation reports and China’s Center for Disease Control.
