Luzon Power Supply On Red Alert: Outages Expected

Want to beat the heat, but can’t because of these brownouts? The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) was compelled to declare a red alert on the Luzon grid for a total of five hours due to unexpected power plant shutdowns and reduced capacities of operating facilities. This announcement made yesterday indicates a potential risk of power outages in certain provinces, spelling a bad omen: especially for the power supply in Luzon.

According to the system operator’s advisory, the red alert status is in effect from yesterday moving forward, at these times: 1 pm to 4 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm. It signifies that the available power supply is insufficient to meet the demand.

The NGCP reported that five power plants were undergoing forced outages, while three others were operating at lower capacities than usual. During the period from 4 pm to 6 pm, the Luzon grid would be under a yellow alert, indicating a slightly improved power supply situation.

Meanwhile, several provinces including Isabela, Quirino, and Ilocos Sur experienced power interruptions, as stated on the NGCP’s official Twitter account.

In response to the NGCP’s advisory, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced the implementation of rotational power interruptions lasting up to two hours in certain areas covered by its franchise. Meralco’s franchise area encompasses central to southern Luzon, including Metro Manila.

Meralco assured the public that they are closely monitoring the situation and ready to take additional measures if necessary. Has the power supply situation in Luzon affected you as well?
