Microsoft is looking to introduce a new version of Windows, 6 years after the introduction of Windows 10. The new operating system will be announced later this month, on June 24 at 11 am Eastern Time.
The new version of Windows comes on the heels of reports of Microsoft killing Windows 10X, a variant of their current operating system developed for dual-screen devices, as well as for small form factor laptops and other devices. Elements of Windows 10X will be integrated into the new version of the OS, according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during his keynote in the company’s BUILD developer conference this year.
“Instead of bringing a product called Windows 10X to market in 2021 like we originally intended, we are leveraging learnings from our journey thus far and accelerating the integration of key foundational 10X technology into other parts of Windows and products at the company,” Nadella said.
The new operating system will allow developers to monetize their apps and programs according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella – which may equate to a significant revamp to how the Windows store works.
“Soon we will share one of the most significant updates to Windows of the past decade to unlock greater economic opportunity for developers and creators,” he added.
It wouldn’t be a new version of Windows without a redesign, and in that regard, Microsoft will also be tweaking the UI of the new OS. Users can expect rounding corners on buttons, app windows, and shell elements, as well as adding useful features like a battery usage chart, handy for anyone working away from the plug; a better snap assist view experience and a new gesture layer that sits above the UI for tablets.
A teaser of this new version of Windows OS was shown to participants of the company’s Build developer conference last week.
