Do you remember Palworld, the game that went viral early this year as “Pokemon, but with guns”? Well, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company are not happy about that, and they have officially filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair, Inc., the developer behind Palworld for patent infringement.
“Nintendo will continue to take necessary actions against any infringement of its intellectual property rights including the Nintendo brand itself, to protect the intellectual properties it has worked hard to establish over the years,” Nintendo said in their press statement.
While Nintendo did not mention which patents Pocketpair allegedly infringed upon, a closer look at some of the characters in Palworld shows that they copied from some of Pokemon’s iconic characters like Pikachu. It’s also worth noting that Nintendo filed a patent infringement case–and not a copyright case–so it remains to be seen what is the extent of Nintendo’s lawsuit.
Earlier this year, The Pokemon Company filed a statement, where they said that they “have not granted any permission for the use of Pokémon intellectual property or assets in that game.” Despite some details in Palworld looking too similar to Pokemon–along with accusations that generative AI was used to develop Palworld–none of these accusations have been proven yet. “We intend to investigate and take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to the Pokémon,” The Pokemon Company said in their statement.
