Opensignal August 2022: Philippines 5G Speeds Closely Match Japan

As 5G connectivity continues to mature in the APAC region, Opensignal went on to analyze 11 of the biggest cities in the region and found some interesting findings in its August 2022 report. With download speeds, Seoul is on top at 453.1Mbps, while Metro Manila is at 150.7Mbps. For comparison, that places the Philippines’ capital higher than Hong Kong (137Mbps) and just behind Tokyo (163Mbps).

This marks a good improvement for the Philippines when it comes to 5G speeds–and corroborates with OpenSignal’s previous report stating that 5G speeds in the Philippines this 2022 are better compared to WiFi in certain scenarios.

When it comes to upload speeds, however, Metro Manila beats Tokyo, attaining 14.4Mbps vs the latter’s 11.9Mbps. On the top end of the spectrum, Kuala Lumpur beats Seoul in upload speeds, attaining 52.8Mbps against the latter’s 40.6Mbps.

While there’s no surprise that Seoul is still the leader when it comes to 5G connectivity, Kuala Lumpur ranked high because it only began a commercial launch in May 2022 with Yes, and that Malaysia’s wholesale 5G network currently has few users and a much lighter load compared to other major cities in the APAC region.

When it comes to 5G experience in Opensignal’s test period between April 1 to June 29, the Philippines fared better with 5G video, with Metro Manila garnering 71.6 points and is just less than three points behind Tokyo. When it comes to gaming, Metro Manila scored 66.6 points, making it almost 9 points behind Tokyo.

In comparing 5G performance to 4G, Opensignal notes that Metro Manila is in second place when it comes to download speed improvement at 7.3, while users best experience the improvement of using 5G connectivity with videos–Opensignal cites that Metro Manila users experience a whopping 54% improvement as compared to watching videos on a 4G connection.

Despite all those improvements that come with 5G connectivity, Metro Manila still needs to improve its 5G availability. Opensignal reports that the APAC region is still working out in its rollout of 5G connectivity, with Seoul topping the charts at 43.4%. The Philippines is at 18.2% coverage, which places it behind Singapore’s 18.6%.

Overall, the Philippines is continually improving its 5G connectivity this 2022, though it still has to catch up with coverage.
