Samsung is widely-known in the industry as a giant when it comes to technological innovation. One could argue that they were the first company to push foldable devices into the mainstream and show that this latest form factor isn’t just another gimmick.

The legacy Galaxy Fold and Flip devices paved the way for other manufacturers to push through with their own iterations, turning the space into a competitive one now. Daddy is back with a vengeance – welcome the latest Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4.

As expected here, the latest Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 comes in with a flagship-grade Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor that is also found in goliaths such as the ASUS ROG Phone 6. Unlike some other brands out there, Samsung has always chosen to install the most powerful chipsets currently available into its foldable phones. This could be a justification for the lofty price tag these often go for.

Let’s first address the elephant in the room: thermals. There were numerous issues with sustained performance using the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. Since the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is considerably more compact than your average candy bar device, these concerns are more than valid. However, we’ve seen the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 manage its temperatures more effectively in the newest devices on the market. We can also rest assured that the development team over at Samsung isn’t slacking off on the production of such a touted device within their lineup.

The processor is then supported by a healthy 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM, which has proven to be enough for most users when multitasking. It’s true that smartphones with RAM amounts in the double digits have been released in the past years, but it has never been viewed as a necessity. Storage options for saving your important files are either 128, 256, or 512GB. Better get what you need early on since there’s no room for microSD card expansion here.

Talking about the form factor, many were already very pleased with the previous iteration so most things were kept the same. Sizes are identical at a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED external display with a resolution of 260×512 when unfolded, and a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex Internal Display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate on the inside. Having this adaptive rate will surely save a bit of battery and consume less processing power, thus reducing battery usage and heat. We can expect only the best colors and brightness levels from Samsung’s ubiquitous AMOLED technology.

Cameras here are pretty standard with a main dual-camera system comprised of a 12-megapixel main camera with OIS, as well as a 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor. There’s only so much Samsung can do with the limited space on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 and its tiny chassis, but we can expect optimization on the software side of things. A 10-megapixel front-facing shooter makes itself available for selfies.

Keeping the lights on is a 3700 mAh battery that can be topped up with 25W quick charging or 15W wireless charging. Other noteworthy features include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that could debatably be superior to under-display versions, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and an IPX8 Rating. The last one means that the device can handle continuous immersion in water more than 1 meter deep. It would be best to avoid particles and other items falling into the hinges though.
