Two giants in their respective fields are teaming up to manufacture electric vehicles (EV). Japan-based Sony and Honda will start developing, manufacturing, and selling battery electric vehicles soon.

The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding that outlines their intent to establish a joint venture. The next step is negotiation with the goal of establishing a new company dedicated for electric vehicles in 2023.

Of course, Honda will contribute its mobility development capabilities, vehicle body manufacturing technology, and after-sales service management experience that it has polished over many years. On the other hand, Sony will take advantage of its Imaging, sensing, telecommunication, network, and entertainment technologies.

Although the new company will be established as early as next year, sales will begin in 2025. Also, since Honda owns and operates manufacturing facilities, it is expected to manufacture  the first EV the partnership will develop. Meanwhile, Sony is expected to create a service mobility platform for the partnership.

During the announcement, Sony had its Vision-S 02 prototype electric crossover from the CES technology show on display. Sony has long implied its intention to enter the electric vehicle (ev) market since its development of Vision-S 01 electric sedan.
