The Helio G36 Brings Entry-Level Gaming At A Lower Price

For those who aren’t familiar with the MediaTek Helio series, they’re an entry-level series of chipsets built by MediaTek for budget offerings. They’re designed to operate in devices within the same price point – except here, the competition is to deliver the highest level of performance at the same price. Now we have the MediaTek Helio G36 which is set to be the next processor of choice for ultra-budget gaming smartphones.

This Helio G36 is based on the currently existing Helio G37 with some tweaks. It’s still an octa-core chip based on the ARM Cortex A53 CPU, although clock speeds have been trimmed down from 2.3 GHz to 2.2. We assume that these changes result from the desire to have more efficient thermal performance as well as battery efficiency.

The GPU onboard is the IMG PowerVR GE8320. Overall, the chipset supports 4G/LTE bands, WiFi/Bluetooth 5, a 90Hz display refresh rate, Full HD video recording/playback, dual 13-megapixel camera shooting and/or a single 50-megapixel main sensor with bokeh effects, among other features.

We’re not too sure yet about its gaming performance – although we may be able to use the G37 as a comparison point.

Other testers were able to achieve a consistent 60 FPS on all low settings playing the ultra-demanding Genshin Impact. Sure, all visual attributes may have to be toggled off, but being able to play with such a smooth experience is already impressive within this segment.

There is no real announcement yet as to which device the Helio G36 chipset will make its first appearance in. We’ll be sure to keep you posted on more news.
