This Special-Edition Geely Coolray Is A Budget Hot Crossover

We saw a lot of things at the 2022 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS), but a special-edition Geely Coolray definitely caught our eye. It was clad in more aggressive kits than ever before and proudly donned a familiar light blue color. At first glance, we thought the Hyundai Kona N had made a Philippine debut. The additions go further than just the kits though – a chat with the team stationed at the Geely area kindly introduced us to the automobile in question.

This is your standard-fare Geely Coolray with some modifications that go beyond aesthetics. On the outside, the changes are immediately apparent. The front lip looks like it got pulled off a supercar, ready to chomp down on the cars in front. This is done in a carbon finish, which extends to the side skirts shaped like a barber’s razor. A bit of work is done to the rear as well to achieve a similar effect. Despite these additions, the car still manages to look tasteful.

Also done splendidly is the choice of wheels. Installed is a set from XXR, a company known worldwide for producing lightweight performers. Their black color contrasts well with the car’s blue hues and gives it a sporty look. The color also allows the INSPEED big brake kit to stand out a little bit more. Yes, another addition to this edition of the Coolray is the performance brake kit so you can easily stop on a dime. Upon further inspection, steel brake lines have also been installed which should provide sustained performance even under prolonged use. The Geely Coolray might just be a track car now.

The last but not the least attention-grabbing modification is a specialized exhaust system fabricated by DRIFT XAUST. The car wasn’t started, but this system should give the vehicle a little bit of rumble to assert its dominance coming down the street. What’s a performance car if it doesn’t sound the part?

These changes should add a little bit of power. Rumors have been floating around that this version of the Geely Coolray has been tuned to around 200 horsepower to the wheels. The powertrain is mated to a 7-speed wet DCT. Those are serious numbers that could give even some sports cars a run for their money in a straight line. We’d also be very excited to try this car on the track.

On the inside, the Coolray retains the same interior that many buyers have come to enjoy. The combination of leather and aluminum spread over the panels is an experience that punches above its price class.

According to the sources at the Geely booth, this entire kit will cost around PHP 200,000 or whereabouts on top of the car’s price. That’s definitely not bad when you consider what goodies you’ll be getting. Even after installing these modifications, the car will still cost you a reasonable sum (around PHP 1.3-1.5M) on par with other crossovers. It could effectively be called a bargain then.
