Time to Come Clean: Xiaomi to Remove Ads with MIUI 14

Time to Come Clean: Xiaomi to Remove Ads with MIUI 14

Ahead of the supposed unveiling of MIUI 14 in China on November 19, reports have disclosed some key changes with the Android overlay of Xiaomi–and the biggest change is the removal of ads and other bloatware.

Long-time Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO users know that having ads within MIUI was one of the ways that Xiaomi was able to grow quickly in the past few years–and to offer competitive price-to-performance compared to other rivals. However, having ads on premium Xiaomi models like the 12 series is unacceptable at this point, and because of that, Xiaomi intends to remove ads starting with MIUI 14. In addition, Xiaomi intends to make MIUI 14 bloatware-free, only leaving Xiaomi’s core apps and key Google apps installed out of the box.

Should Xiaomi push for this, we expect MIUI 14 to be much cleaner and lighter than MIUI 13 with the omission of ads and unnecessary bloatware, and we also hope that MIUI 14 should be free of any glitches as well.

Other key changes expected for MIUI 14 according to the same report include a large folder mode to streamline interaction between the phone and a desktop display, and tweaks to the clock, calendar, and weather tool. Aside from the upcoming Xiaomi 13 series, phones that are expected to support MIUI 14 include the Xiaomi 11 and 12 series, Redmi K40 and K50 series, and POCO F3 and F4 series.
