Twitter to Add Edit Button, but there’s a Catch

Having an edit button is one of the most-requested features for Twitter users. This mythical request has spawned memes and phrases like “think before you tweet”, and that appears to change: Twitter themselves confirmed that they are working on adding an edit button.

The catch? The much-requested feature will only be offered to Twitter Blue subscribers, which means that users need to pay for a feature that they have been waiting for all this time.

Twitter VP for consumer product Jay Sullivan explained that they have been working on an editing feature for many years in a safe manner.

“Without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, Edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation,” Sullivan explained in a tweet. “Protecting the integrity of that public conversation is our top priority when we approach this work.”

With fake news rabidly proliferating the internet, it’s understandable why Twitter is taking their sweet time in adding an actual edit button and possibly limit the feature to its paid users. While the feature will be a godsend for those who need to fix a typo or two on their tweets, adding an edit button may be abused.

Prior to the confirmation that editing tweets might be possible in the future, Twitter did release an undo feature that lets you recall the tweet you sent. However, the said feature is only available for Twitter Blue subscribers.
