Now We Know How Web3 Can Be Great for Games

When we talk about Web3 and games, Axie Infinity comes to mind. This play-to-earn game became very popular during the pandemic as it was an opportunity for Filipinos to earn while they were stuck at home. While Axie Infinity is far from its glory days, the argument for Web3 games has risen anew, as developers explore different ways they can use the blockchain beyond a pay-to-earn aspect.

Anichess
head Brian Chan explained to us a good use case of Web3 in games, which is preserving the game records of players–on top of the items they have acquired in the game. This is among the insights he shared during the press conference of the upcoming YGG Play Summit that’s happening from November 19 to 23.

“Because blockchain and the technology by default, is an open and permissionless ecosystem. So the most fundamental thesis is we wanted to build on the chain so that players actually have true ownership over the items,” Chan explained to us in a one-on-one interview.

Anichess gives a fun and new spin to playing chess, where the pieces have special spells and powers that can be match-defining. Just like traditional chess, Anichess is a game where your strategy skills are put to the test.

The same idea for Anichess also applies to Parallel TCG, which is a hybrid version of trading card games that have both a physical and virtual aspect. Unbox Group Chairman and CEO explained that Web3 is perfect for digital TCGs as it solves a major problem when it comes to owning cards.

“You can look at it on your phone, you can trade it with other people via QR, but you do not own the card, and you do not get the economic value from owning the said asset,” Ople explained at the YGG Play Summit Press conference.

Web3 also can work together with AI, as YGG Co-Founder is exploring a new approach to play-to-earn that involves AI companies. While sorting all the data AI companies need can be a boring task, Li envisions that they can make use of Web3 to simplify it while making it an enjoyable experience. “We want to gamify the experience, and at the same time we educate them and get the job done,” Li said.

Coins.ph CEO Wei Zhou also agrees, adding that they are looking to utilize AI to help its customers make better decisions when it comes to doing trades with various cryptocurrencies. “There’s a huge amount of opportunity with AI,” Zhou adds.

YGG Play Summit is a 5-day event that has various activities like a cosplay competition and four major Web3 gaming tournaments–with Parallel TCG’s tournament offering a $100,000(~Php 5.6 million) prize pool. The summit will also showcase upcoming Web3 games, along with the Gam3 Awards–which will be held for the first time in-person.
