WinAmp Goes Nostalgia Baiting

We know that WinAmp, the music player beloved by Millennials, is back from the dead. However, our first impressions of the “new” WinAmp are underwhelming, as it simply looks and feels like the same UI we’re accustomed to with Apple Music and Spotify. WinAmp knows that its main audience is Millenials, so it recently announced that it is making the legacy player source code available to everyone.

It seems that WinAmp is going for nostalgic baiting with this announcement, as having different skins has been the main selling point of the original app from the 2000s. You can download the source code here and tinker around it to your liking. You can give it a funky theme, modernize the look of the OG WinAmp, or make one that can work with iOS and Android devices–provided that you are using the source code for non-commercial use to ensure that Winamp remains free and secure.

That being said, some are skeptical of WinAmp’s latest move: Hackaday argues that the source code is not completely open because 1) you’ll need a specific version of Visual Studio 2019, and 2) a paragraph under the Winamp Collaborative License limits the distribution of modified versions to the “maintainers of the official repository”. This means that as much as you want to play around with the legacy source code, WinAmp still has the final say if your mods are qualified for a wider distribution.
