Following the footsteps of Netflix in announcing more affordable paid plans, YouTube confirms that they are making their new Premium Lite plan available to select European users in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands.
The new offering was confirmed by The Verge, with Premium Lite priced at 6.99 Euros/month(~Php 415). For reference, the regular YouTube plan is priced at 11.99 Euros(~Php 715). A savings of approximately Php 300 is big, as it makes YouTube Premium more competitive against the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime.
For that savings you get for Premium Lite, you are limited to ad-free viewing on YouTube and YouTube for Kids. Other features like YouTube Music, background playback on mobile, and offline downloads will remain exclusive to the regular Premium tier.
YouTube is testing Premium Lite on select countries for now, and hints that it may arrive in other countries–including the Philippines–soon. Aside from the newly-introduced ad-free plan, YouTube is also looking into other possible subscription plans based on user feedback.
With the pricing of Premium Lite, this new offering is very tempting especially if you consider the countless number of ads that appear every time you click on a video. Premium Lite may be on an experimental phase for now, but it is interesting to see the video streaming platform explore different tiered plans to accommodate all of its users.
