The Dark Knight Returns

Play Arts Kai, the manufacturing arm of Square Enix, has become notorious for releasing so many Batman variants in the last year. We’ve actually bought a couple of them but one of our top favorites is still this figure. This Batman is from The Dark Knight Returns universe. This is the old Batman that is forced to don the cape and cowl once again after Gotham gets plagued by criminals called the Mutants. It’s a 2-part cartoon movie that Batman fans should definitely watch.

Being Old Never Looked So Kick Ass

This Batman is different from a lot of the other Batman toys. First, it’s probably the stockiest Batman to date. Don’t think though that it’s all fat. Batman still managed to keep his body in tip top condition even in his late fifties and it show in how ripped he is in this figure. If you also take a closer look at the face of this figure you can really tell that this Batman is old. Wrinkles are there and his eyes have some sort of “oldie sparkle” which we usually see with grandparents, hehe.

As expected from Play Arts Kai, the level of detail in this figure is crazy. They even made sure that the armor here has a hardened texture and build. They also made sure that the utility belt had buttons and latches to make it look more realistic. Here are a couple of photos for your appreciation.

The figure also comes with a few accessories and extras. One hand peg has Bat shurikens molded in between the fingers. There’s also a rope with a Batarang attached to the end. It looks like some sort of old school grappling hook. Here are photos of both accessories.

As you can see it’s a really kick ass figure! True embodiment of “Angas”.

If we have one complaint though it’s the articulation. There are actually quite a lot of articulation points but we can barely pose Batman because the range of movement of his arms and torso are limited. There are only a few poses we could do properly and most of them aren’t even action shots. We can definitely make him look menacing though, hehe.

Batman from The Dark Knight Returns by Play Arts Kai is still being sold by a few shops scattered in Greenhills (3rd Floor Shoppesville). Price fluctuates wildly though. We saw a store selling this for as low as Php2,500 while another one was selling it for Php4,000.
