Iron Man Mark I

The Mark I is undoubtedly the “weakest” suit among all the armors Tony Stark ever made but it’s probably one of the most significant ones because it was the very first. I can still remember the excitement when I saw it for the first time on the big screen during the premiere screening of the Iron Man movie way back in 2008! It was crude and “buggy” but it definitely was more than enough to get Tony Stark out of the terrorist camp. It had a barrage of weapons including the unforgettable flame thrower.

Here’s the TV spot of the movie which shows the armor in action. Nice to watch it because it really jogs your memory and kinda brings you back to that first moment when you saw it stumble out of the cave and into the daylight while being peppered by bullets from machine guns.

Iron Man (First Movie) Trailer

I found a good deal for the figure in one of the Toy Collector Facebook Groups. Definitely a good addition to our growing Iron Man 1/6th figure collection. Anyway, let’s jump right into our feature!

Kinda Looks Like RDJ

First up we have the head sculpt of Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark. Hot Toys was able to capture the stress and uncertainty in the facial expression but it’s definitely not as good as the head sculpts of other Iron Man figures like the one from The Avengers Mark VII, the Mechanic, or the IM3 Lab. Most of the time though you won’t see the face in this fig since the iron mask will be down covering it, hehe.

Jaw-dropping Level of Detail

The real draw and highlight of the Iron Man Mark I figure is without a doubt the level of detail in the suit. As we mentioned earlier, this was the crudest suit of armor that Tony Stark ever made. The gears, wires, and gizmos were all exposed in the movie since there wasn’t time for Tony to make it properly. That’s exactly what we get with this 1/6th figure. It looks and feels like a big exoskeleton armor.

There are two LED lights in this figure. The first one is the arc reactor which is located at the center of the armor’s chest. The second one is a red bulb on the left arm of the figure. The batteries are located at the back including the on/off switch.

If we have one criticism it would be the articulation but that’s mainly due to how restrictive the armor is. There were many times we felt that we would break something if we forced the arm or leg into a certain pose. We also noticed that the figure has a hard time standing on it’s own so it really needs a good solid base to keep it upright.

Awesome Base and Flame Blast

Fortunately the base that comes with the figure isn’t your usual generic black Hot Toys base. The one we get is inspired from the Terrorist desert camp, complete with missiles from Stark Industries. Makes for a good mini diorama!

Another accessory is the flame blast. Nice final touch to give the figure more personality!

Plays Well with Others

Over-all posability is a bit limited though since you can really just make use of the flame blast and the rocket in the other arm. It’s nice to pose together with other figures, especially with other Iron Man suits. Here are a couple of pics:

Makes Us Wanna Collect All the Iron Men!

I think the danger of buying this particular figure is that you’ll get really tempted to go all-out in collecting all the other Iron Man suits (and maybe build your own 1/6th scale Hall of Armor). That’s definitely how we felt after getting it, hehe.

The Iron Man Mark I 1/6th Scale Figure has a wide price point these days. Some sellers are letting it go for less than Php10,000 but some Toy Stores are pricing it above Php12,000.
