PHISGOC and Razer Reveal Shortlisted Games for the 2019 SEA Games eSports Tournament

They selected popular titles for the inaugural tournament

As we count the days before the Philippines will host the first eSports Tournament at the 2019 SEA Games, Razer and Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) revealed five of the six games that will be part of the tournament. They are:

  • PC GamesDota2 and StarCraft II
  • Mobile GamesMobile Legends: Bang Bang and Arena of Valor
  • Console GamesTekken 7

While Mobile Legends was already a given since Moonton—the game’s publisher, was selected as the official gaming partner. Both Razer and PHISGOC are in talks as to what will be the other medalled console game, citing that it will be shortlisted in the coming weeks.

“In the three weeks since we announced esports as a medal event at SEA Games 2019, we’ve seen a phenomenal level of interest from all segments of the industry, most of all game publishers,” Razer co-founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan said. “he shortlisting of six games in such a short time is evidence that the notion of esports as a legitimate sporting event is no longer a fad.”

As explained in their press release, diversity of titles is one of the key factors in selecting the games that will be part of the eSports tournament. Other factors considered include strategy and teamwork demanded by the games and the physical and mental intensity needed to persevere through marathon matches.

“We look forward to having more partners come on board and join us in defining a new generation of sporting heroes for the youth and millennials,” Tan adds.
