Chinese EV manufacturer BYD will become the biggest electric vehicle manufacturer in 2025, beating out even American company Tesla, according to research firm Counterpoint. It’s expected that BYD will capture a 15.7% global market share for battery electric vehicles (BEV), fueled by its rapid expansion in multiple countries (including the Philippines) as Tesla continues to falter.
Tesla’s reputation in territories like the Americas and Europe where it initially found success is rapidly deteriorating, mostly thanks to the actions of its CEO Elon Musk, who has thrown his support behind US President Donald Trump. Many of the primary buyers that would buy an electric vehicle in the US or Europe are now ditching the brand for alternatives. Deliveries for Tesla’s vehicles fell 13% YoY, which is below what Wall Street expected for the company. Tesla’s FSD has still not materialized and there hasn’t been a compelling upgrade in technology for their vehicles for a while.
BYD meanwhile has released multiple new features for their cars, including:
- 1,000V Electrical Architecture: Enables high-efficiency energy transfer with reduced losses.
- 10C Charging Rate Batteries: Delivers up to 400 km (249 miles) of range in just 5 minutes.
- Silicon Carbide (SiC) Power Chips: Enhances charging efficiency and heat resistance.
- Blade Battery Technology: BYD’s proprietary LFP-based Blade Battery is optimized for safety, durability, and ultra-fast charging.
Abhik Mukherjee, Research Analyst at Counterpoint, stated, “The system can deliver 400 km of range in just 5 minutes, setting a new industry benchmark, far outpacing Tesla’s Supercharger, which adds about 275 km in 10 minutes. This technological leap is expected to significantly ease consumer concerns around charging time and boost EV adoption by reducing charging anxiety.”
BYD Philippines earlier stated that they’ve achieved an astounding 8,900% growth and has secured an 82% market share in the NEV segment, and 68% share in the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment. They are the current leading BEV brand in the Philippines.
