Trump Rescinds Executive Order on AI Safety

Donald Trump is busy with a lot of things as the 47th President of the United States: aside from giving TikTok a 75-day reprieve to give ByteDance more time to sell its US operations, Trump also revoked an Executive Order on AI Safety.

Signed in 2023 by former US President Joe Biden, the said executive order was meant to reduce the risks that AI poses to consumers, workers, and national security. Under it, all AI systems that may pose risks to national security, economy, public health, or safety should share the results of their safety tests with the US government before being released to the public.

Trump’s move to rescind the Executive Order on AI safety is due to the Republican Party’s belief that such measures hinder AI innovation–adding that AI development is rooted in free speech and human flourishing.

Some of the criticisms with AI include fears that it could make some jobs obsolete, along with the energy demands needed for growing AI data centers. Biden did issue a separate Executive Order for the latter, calling for leasing federal sites owned by Defense and Energy departments, and Trump did not rescind that particular Executive Order.
