The King is Back: Huawei Mate 50 Pro is Number 1 in DxOMark

It has been a while since we last heard from Huawei dominating the DxOMark charts. despite no longer having Leica as its partner, Huawei grabs the DxOMark throne once again with the Mate 50 Pro, posting a score of 149. This makes the Mate 50 Pro score two points higher than the former champs: the Pixel 7 Pro and the Magic4 Ultimate.

To recap, the Mate 50 Pro has a triple rear camera setup that consists of a 50-megapixel f/1.4-4.0 main camera with OIS, a 13-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 64-megapixel f/3.5 telephoto camera with 3.5x optical zoom and OIS.

In its review, DxOMark commended the Mate 50 Pro for its overall high-quality photography performance in almost all situations with a “truly outstanding” performance in low-light situations. The Mate 50 Pro also gets an edge with its variable aperture system for the main camera, which further helps it perform significantly better in low-light compared to current phones that have a fixed aperture. We first saw a multiple-aperture camera system with the Galaxy S9, and the Xperia PRO-I is the other current smartphone that makes use of a variable aperture system.

“The Huawei system uses an embedded diaphragm that allows for adjustment from f/1.4 to f/4.0, so, depending on the scene, the camera can either prioritize light capture (in low light), maximize depth of field, or pick a more balanced setting between the two extremes,” DxOMark explained in its review.

While the Mate 50 Pro’s ultra-wide-angle camera is not as special as the main camera, DxOMark said that general image quality is great–and the same can be said with its telephoto camera. Aside from photography, DxOMark also commended the Mate 50 Pro for its performance when it comes to taking videos in both indoor and outdoor scenarios. Despite being on top, the Mate 50 Pro still has points for improvement, which include shutter lag when capturing photos in difficult lighting conditions.
