After announcing the A7 IV a few days ago, Sony prepared another major announcement with the Xperia Pro-I. As a smartphone geared towards professionals, the Xperia PRO-I is the first phone available globally to have a 1-inch sensor (the Aquos R6 is technically the first, but it is exclusive to Japan).

While it is based on the flagship Xperia 1 III, the PRO-I’s tour de force is the 1-inch sensor that is borrowed from the RX100 VII. Since it is “optimized for a smartphone”, the Xperia PRO-I does not use the entire 20-megapixel sensor; instead it uses a big chunk of the 1-inch sensor to produce 12-megapixel images with 2.4um pixels–which is roughly the same size as that on the Galaxy S21 Ultra after binning. Only the Xiaomi 11 Ultra beats the Xperia PRO-I’s sensor, as Xiaomi’s premium flagship boasts 2.8um pixels.
Key highlights of the main camera include a 24mm focal length equivalent, a variable f/2.0/4.0 aperture, Zeiss T* coating, Real-Time eye autofocus, OIS, 315 phase-detect AF points, 12-bit RAW shooting, and the ability to shoot 4K video at up to 120fps. These features are something you don’t see on any smartphone.
Accompanying the large main camera are two smaller 12-megapixel cameras: one is a 16mm f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera with a 1/2.5-inch sensor and a 50mm f/2.4 telephoto camera with a 1/2.9-inch sensor and 2x optical zoom. In addition to those three cameras, the PRO-I has a 3D iToF sensor. Being a professional device, the Xperia PRO-I has a dedicated shutter button that works like the one on the RX100 VII.
Save for the cameras, the Xperia PRO-I shares similar specs with the Xperia 1 III: 6.5-inch 4K 120hz OLED display, Snapdragon 888, 12GB RAM, 512GB internal storage, and a 4500mAh battery with support for 30w USB-PD charging.
Accessories for the Xperia PRO-I include a Vlog monitor that has a 3.5-inch HD+ LCD display to aid vloggers in filming themselves. It will also have support for Sony’s GP-VPT2BT Bluetooth shooting grip.
The Sony Xperia PRO-I is priced at $1800(~Php 91.4k), with pre-orders starting on October 28.
