This everything you can expect from Samsung’s new flagship
Samsung’s upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus is probably one of the most documented smartphones to date that hasn’t been released officially. There’s so much information out in the web right now that we can begin to construct an accurate picture of what to expect from the Korean company’s latest and greatest. So today, we’re doing exactly that. Here’s all we know about the flagship so far, brought to you by leaks all around the web:
It’ll have gigantic displays and a slim body
The most obvious new feature that the new Galaxy S8 smartphones have are its displays: a 5.8-inch panel for the Galaxy S8 and a 6.2-inch panel for the S8+. That’s not surprising at the least, since flagships are getting bigger and bigger displays nowadays, but what is impressive is how small both phones are relative to their screen size – the Galaxy S8+, for example, looks no bigger than LG’s V20 flagship while having a display that’s substantially bigger. We expect this to be true of the smaller Galaxy S8 as well.
It’ll just have a single camera on the rear
Dual camera phones are certainly en vogue this season, with many of Samsung’s competitors releasing several models with both dual rear and front cameras. But despite this Samsung is refusing to jump onto the dual camera bandwagon, since both phones have consistently been shown in leaks having just a single rear and front camera.
No Google Assistant here, just Bixby
AI is fast becoming a major selling point for phones nowadays, with Google banking on Assistant, Apple on Siri and now, Samsung on Bixby. The new AI assistant that’s destined for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ was announced a few days ago by Samsung themselves, so we have a good idea on what to expect when we see it in action in a few day’s time.
In a nutshell, Samsung’s new AI assistant is supposedly more capable than either Google Assistant or Siri, and will be able to help you navigate and access apps on the phone via voice aside from doing all the regular virtual assistant stuff. Samsung says that Bixby is able to do everything you’re able to do via touch, and just like most other virtual assistants today it’s a learning AI and only gets better and faster the more you use it.
The fastest Galaxy ever
Samsung’s Galaxy S lineup is usually the first one to receive the newest iteration of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon flagship processors and the Korean firm’s own Exynos line of chipsets when it launches, so it’s no surprise that the Galaxy S8 and S8+ will be shipping with the Snapdragon 835 processor and Exynos 8895 when it’s announced in a few days time. Historically Asian customers get the Exynos variant of Samsung’s flagships and there’s no indications that won’t be the case for the S8 and S8+.
You shouldn’t be jealous of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor though, as the Exynos 8895 is quite a beast on its own on paper. It’s composed of four Cortex A53 cores running at 1.7GHz and four of Samsung’s own custom M2 cores running at 2.5GHz. The new 20-core Mali-G71 MP20 GPU is a huge step up from the previous iteration of the chip.
The result? Samsung says that the new chip has around 27% better performance than the 8890, and around 40% better power consumption. This is in part thanks to the smaller, more efficient 10nm manufacturing process for the new chips – something that will come in handy when the new big-screen phones arrive.
It’ll leave a sizable hole in your bank account
With all the bells and whistles of the Galaxy S8 and S8+, it’s only understandable that the phones will be quite expensive when it arrives in the Philippines. Prolific leaker Evan Blass posted expected European pricing for both phones a few days ago and it isn’t pretty. Even accounting the fact that European pricing will always be higher due to higher taxes, you can expect the Galaxy S8 to be priced near the 40K mark, while the Galaxy S8+ will certainly be in the low 40’s. That’s pricing approaching iPhone territory, though you will have to consider that both devices use large, hard-to-produce curved Super AMOLED panels. Still, that price though.
