AMD Announces Ryzen 6000 Mobile Processors with Zen 3+ Architecture

In its packed keynote at CES 2022, AMD announced its latest mobile processors with the Ryzen 6000 series. The new processors make use of AMD’s Zen3+ architecture and are manufactured using a 6nm process. These improvements aim to reduce power consumption by 40% in lightweight tasks like Netflix while offering as much as 28% better CPU performance with the Ryzen 6800U when compared to the Ryzen 5800U.

The Ryzen 6000 series also gain support for USB 4.0, PCIe 4.0, DDR5 RAM, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2, and AV1 decoding. The Ryzen 6000 series will consist of the U-series for thin and light notebooks and the H-series for gaming and creator laptops. Another key upgrade to the Ryzen 6000 processors is that they trade the old Vega GPU architecture for RDNA 2, which should mean that their integrated graphics will deliver vastly better performance than the Ryzen 5000 series. Aside from the GPU upgrade, the Ryzen 6000 processors also have a Microsoft Pluton security processor, which is meant to keep Windows 10 and 11 PCs more secure.

Laptops with AMD Ryzen 6000 processors will be released in February 2022. The first laptops to use the new processors include Lenovo’s ThinkPad Z series and ASUS’ 2022 ROG Zephyrus G14 and Strix G gaming laptops.

AMD also revealed an updated Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which is a variation of the Ryzen 5800X but comes with AMD’s new 3D V-Cache technology. While it has slightly lower clock speeds, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D comes with 100MB cache.

Rounding up its processor announcements is the confirmation of the Zen 4-based Ryzen 7000 series processors, which are slated to arrive by the second half of 2022. AMD revealed a few details of its upcoming processors, which include a 5nm TSMC process, support for PCIe 5.0 and DDR5, and support for the upcoming AM5 motherboard socket.
