It only has been a month since GoPro made the Hero 13 Black official, and DJI has responded once again with an action camera that’s supposedly better than it. Called the Osmo Action 5 Pro, DJI’s main bragging rights are not with an interchangeable lens system–instead, it boasts an absurd 13.5 stops of dynamic range and up to 4 hours of battery life–both being unheard of in an action camera.
How is this possible? DJI used a large 1/1.3-inch sensor on the Osmo Action 5 Pro, which has 2.4um pixels. On paper, this translates to better low-light performance especially if you plan to shoot 4K60 footage, and DJI claims that the sensor can “capture intricate shadow details without overexposing highlights”. That sounds like DJI is using similar tech you’d find on high-end phones. This is further supported by DJI’s use of AI noise reduction for SuperNight mode (which caps off at 4K30), along with machine learning algorithms for its subject-centering and tracking features.
DJI’s insane battery life claim on the Osmo Action 5 Pro is based on shooting 1080p video at room temperature, so its 4-hour run time claim for its 1950mAh may vary–regardless, DJI still promises a battery life that’s better than the industry average. Perhaps one contributing factor has to be its use of OLED displays, which are known to be more power efficient compared to LCDs.
Other tricks that the Osmo Action 5 Pro has include 20m water resistance without a case, native wireless connection to the DJI Mic 2 transmitter, 47GB of internal storage (on top of the usual MicroSD card slot), WiFi live streaming with WiFi 6 support, pre-record feature, and the ability to sync footage from multiple cameras.
DJI’s new action camera is even more affordable than the Hero 13 Black with an official retail price of Php 22,190Â for the base kit, and Php 27,990 for the Adventure combo.
