HMD Global to Launch New Nokia Flagship in 2021

It has been two years since HMD Global last launched an actual flagship with the Nokia 9 Pureview. We were supposed to see its successor last year, but delays and other issues marred it from becoming a reality.

For 2021, however, HMD Global did confirm that they intend to launch a new Nokia flagship phone. This was said by HMD China Product Manager Zhang Yucheng, where it is slated to launch on November 11—also known as Single’s Day in China.

We do not know much yet about the 2021 Nokia flagship yet, but it is possible that the Nokia 9 branding will be dropped in favor of an X branding. Currently, HMD Global has the Nokia X10 and X20—with both phones falling under the entry level 5G category.

The rumored X50 is said to get a 108-megapixel main rear camera with Zeiss optics, an ultra-wide-angle and telephoto cameras, and a Snapdragon 775 processor. The camera setup would mean that the next Nokia flagship will go more for a versatile setup rather than sticking with 5 cameras with the same resolution and megapixel count—which was the case with the Nokia 9 Pureview.

It is rumored to get a 6.5-inch Quad HD+ display with a 120hz refresh rate and a large 6000mAh battery.

Aside from the X50, there is also a rumored X70 that will use a custom sensor co-designed by Nokia. While we are excited about this idea, we’re skeptical at the same time given the rather disappointing camera performance of the Nokia 9 Pureview, which had a camera system co-developed with Light.

While this confirmation lights up hopes for a true Nokia flagship, it is best to wait it out until HMD Global actually pushes through with it this time around.
