Yes, Huawei is serious with the triple rear camera design
There has been talks about Huawei’s upcoming P-series phones as early as late 2017, and the thought of a smartphone having three rear cameras do sound mundane. Even with the leaked schematics revealing three P-series models, it’s just hard to imagine the point of having three cameras at the back.
But then, that’s what we initially said when we saw phones with dual rear cameras back in 2016, popularized by Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus. Fast forward to 2018, phones with dual rear or dual front cameras (or both) are the norm, so it’s not surprising if someone would think of the next camera trend.
Having said that, new leaked renders of Huawei’s P20 have surfaced on the web, showcasing an 18:9 display with a fingerprint scanner at the bottom of the screen, and the triple camera setup at the back.
From the renders, the three cameras have the same size, and are arranged horizontally, with a dual LED flash found beside the triple threat module. As for what photography features these three cameras can do, it is rumored that all three cameras will be utilized to create a massive 40-megapixel photo. Alternatively, the module is rumored give the P20 a 5x hybrid zoom, though we still have to hear from Huawei with how it works.
The P20, along with the P20 Plus and P20 Pro, is slated to launch at MWC 2018. Do note that these are renders, so we take it as a grain of salt until we get confirmation from Huawei.
