MagSafe is COMING to Android with Qi2 Wireless Standard

Apple wants everyone to adopt its MagSafe technology with the unveiling of the Qi2 wireless charging standard.

Hate it or love it, Apple’s MagSafe solution, which became a mainstay on its phones since the iPhone 12, is a good way of ensuring a stable wireless charging connection to your device thanks to the use of magnets. This ensures that your device is placed at the right location of your wireless charger, and makes sure that wireless battery packs will stick through your phone and not fall off. Apple’s idea is so promising, that it actually like everyone to use MagSafe through the upcoming Qi2 wireless charging standard.

In a press release from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), where Apple is a member, they stated that the new Qi2 standard is built upon MagSafe technology, and it is working with other WPC members for a unified magnetic charging profile. “Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile will ensure that phones or other rechargeable battery-powered mobile products are perfectly aligned with charging devices, thus providing improved energy efficiency and faster charging.”

While Qi2 is not aimed towards increasing wireless charging speeds (it will most likely still be capped at 15w), the big story here is that Apple is actually pushing for universal compatibility of its MagSafe technology, which comes to s surprise given how Apple likes to keep its walled garden within its own ecosystem.

Outside of Apple’s MagSafe standard, realme did introduce a similar solution with MagDart back in 2021, though they only announced one phone that makes use of MagDart.

Smartphones and chargers that will use the Qi2 standard will be available by Holiday 2023.
