New Huawei P50 Leaks Confirm Initial Renders

Huawei has been very quiet with phone releases, save for a few launches involving variations of its 2020 models. We know that the Huawei P50 should be coming soon, and new leaks reveal what appears to be a prototype unit.

Shared by DigitalChatStation over Weibo, the leaked prototype involves the vanilla P50 and confirms the renders we have been seeing for the past few months. While the humongous module has two big circles, each circle houses two cameras, pointing to the P50 to have a quad-rear camera setup.

While the P50 series is rumored to sport 1-inch IMX 800 sensor, the  camera layout does not make sense; with a sensor that big, the main camera is expected to occupy one of the big circles—take a look at the camera module layout of the Mi 11 Ultra for example. Going back to the cameras, the P50 is expected to have an ultra-wide-angle camera, telephoto camera, and a ToF sensor.

Going to the front panel, the P50 is going to shift away from pill-shaped punch holes and will go for a centrally-placed punch-hole layout instead. The chin is just as thin as its predecessor, so the vanilla P50 is presumed to have a flat display with a 6.3-inch size. The prototype unit also reveals a possible default wallpaper for the P50, and the HarmonyOS branding at the bottom pretty much confirms that the P50 will run Huawei’s in-house OS out of the box.

While Huawei usually announces its latest P-series phones around the end of March, several delays point to the 2021 flagship series to launch sometime in May or June. Possible reasons for the delay include Huawei polishing HarmonyOS and Huawei carefully allocating its supply of Kirin 9000 chips—especially since TSMC was ordered by the US to stop manufacturing chips for Huawei since September last year.
