Nothing Phone (2) to Use Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1

While reports of the Nothing Phone (2) using a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor have been in the rumor mill for quite some time, founder and CEO Carl Pei himself confirmed that its next phone will indeed use the 2022 flagship chip. While it does not come as a surprise–after all, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 will be a significant upgrade over the Snapdragon 778G+ used on the Nothing Phone (1)–Pei explains that the decision is “not just about speed – it’s about the complete package”. And he does have a point.

For one, a lot of high-end devices have been using the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 instead of going for the newer Gen 2 since the previous-gen flagship offers a lot of power AND corrects most, if not all, of the thermal-related problems associated with the original Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. In a lengthy thread, Pei even pointed out that there’s around an 80% performance improvement with the Nothing Phone (2) over the Nothing Phone (1).

Other highlights Pei noted is that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1’s 18-bit ISP allows the Nothing Phone (2) to support 4K video recording at 60FPS and RAW HDR for those who want to push the phone’s camera performance to the limit. After all, going for a previous-generation flagship chip does have its perks–and one of them is maintaining overall costs.

“Choosing Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 ensures that Phone (2) remains accessible while delivering a significantly improved experience compared to Phone (1),” Pei explains in his series of tweets.

The Nothing Phone (2) will debut in Summer of 2023.
