Roughly two years after OPPO launched its F11 Pro Avengers Edition in the Philippines, the brand continues its Marvel collaboration with a brand-new, Avengers-themed smartphone in the form of the Reno5 4G Marvel Edition. Following the same cues as its predecessor, this special variant gets the full Marvel treatment from head to toe.

Unboxing and packaging contents

Being a special edition phone, the Reno5 4G Marvel Editon goes crazy with the Avengers branding on its black box. The left side of the box has the OPPO Reno5 Marvel Edition branding decked in red, and its overall black and red motif gives off that Miles Morales vibe.

Digging inside the box, you get  a cool set of graphics featuring the OG Avengers: Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man.

As for the accessories, you get a custom-branded set of earphones that has the logos of Captain America and Iron Man, along with an Avenger-branded SuperVOOC charger in black. Honestly, we dig the charger’s color in this black and red colorway over the usual white.

Even the case gets a special design with bold Marvel branding and graphics that feature the OG Avengers.

Design and Display

Beyond being your usual Reno5 4G, this Marvel Edition gets a spruced-up back panel that has the trademark Avengers logo and an overall design that somehow reminds us of the Quantum Suit from Avengers: End Game.

The Avengers logo has a nice chrome finish that shines as light hits through the surface.

While the overall finish is mostly matte, those who feel a bit too OC can snap on the included case for added protection and to make a statement of being a big Marvel fan.

Save for the personalized Marvel touches, you get the same button and port layout found on the regular Reno5 4G. Yes, you get a USB-C port and 3.5mm jack on the Marvel Edition–the latter being important so that you can enjoy your wired cans.

Like the vanilla Reno5 4G, the Marvel edition also has a nice 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a 90hz refresh rate and an in-display fingerprint scanner. You get niceties like deep blacks and vibrant colors, along with Widevine L1 for watching Netflix videos in Full HD.

Being a special edition, you get a custom Marvel theme that is evident in the lock screen, home screen, and even with the app icons. It is a nice touch especially for those who really want to go all-Marvel with their phone.

Camera and Internals

For the cameras and internals, the Marvel Edition shares the same specs as the regular Reno5 4G: 64-megapixel f/1.7 main camera with PDAF, 8-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera, 2-megapixel f/2.4 macro camera, and 2-megapixel f/2.2 mono camera for the rear cameras, a 44-megapixel selfie snapper, Snapdragon 720G, 8GB LPDDR4X RAM, and 128GB UFS 2.1 storage.

The internals is a popular combination among 2021 mid-range phones, and the Snapdragon 720G is a tried-and-tested processor that can handle medium to heavy multitasking to playing popular titles like Asphalt 9 and Genshin Impact.

As for the cameras, they are a tried-and-tested setup that delivers thanks to improved computational photography and better HDR performance for both the main and ultra-wide-angle cameras. It is also great for content creation with features like UltraSteady, AI Highlight Video, Dual View Video, and AI Mixed Portrait.

Like the regular Reno5 4G, you also get a 4310mAh battery that is accompanied by a 50w SuperVOOC charging solution. With fast charging speeds, it will take you around an hour to fully top up the battery to 100%, getting you ready for the day as soon as possible.

Wrap up and early conclusions

Even if it is more expensive than the regular Reno5 4G, the Marvel Edition is a great collectors item with all the customization OPPO has made to it–from the packaging, included accessories, back panel, to the visual UI and special contents inside the phone. The Reno5 4G Marvel Edition is a unique offering, as you can only count the number of official Marvel-branded gadgets that actually offer a decent set of specs.
