OPPO Leads Southeast Asia Market For the First Time in 2024

You read the headline right: for the first time, OPPO is the top-selling brand in Southeast Asia for 2024, outperforming Samsung according to the latest report from Canalys.

In its report, OPPO recorded 16.9 million shipments in 2024 to get an 18% market share. For comparison, Samsung recorded 16.6 million shipments for a 17% market share. OPPO’s year-on-year growth is remarkable at 14%, but it’s hard to ignore Transsion and Xiaomi being the biggest gainers in 2024 with annual growths of 41% and 26% respectively.

OPPO’s strong showing in 2024 is credited to its budget phones like the A18 and the A3x. Looking at numbers for the Philippines, Transsion remains on top thanks to its HOT and Smart series from Infinix.

While global growth of the phone market in Southeast Asia grew by 7%, Canalys notes that the region’s increasing price sensitivity resulted in more budget phones being the main drivers across all brands. Aside from OPPO, Transsion, and Xiaomi, the same trend can be said for Samsung and vivo, where their entry-level phones are among their top sellers for 2024. However, there’s an exception for Samsung, as its flagship Galaxy S24 series sold well thanks to being among the first to showcase generative AI capabilities–a trend that other brands are following with their future models.
