One of the unique features that the Reno12 5G series has to offer is a more refined set of photo editing tools, specifically with AI Eraser. Now on its second iteration, OPPO has made AI Eraser on the Reno12 5G series smarter and more efficient in cleaning up our photos to make them Instagram-worthy.
While we are working on our full review of the Reno12 5G, we want to share how AI Eraser feels more refined, rivaling similar tech that you’d find on more expensive flagship phones.

*Before showcasing the Reno12 5G’s AI Eraser feature, our review unit recently received the July 2024 Security Update, which includes improvements to the camera performance.
For our first example, we have this night shot around Greenhills. You wanted to capture the car that’s behind the sidewalk–but suddenly a person walks through the sidewalk.
For this, we used the AI Eraser’s People Detect feature to scan the image for any photobombers intelligently. It spotted not just one but two people photobombing the photo (the second one is a motorcycle, but AI Eraser detected it as a person). It took the Reno12 5G less than 20 seconds to implement the edits, and we got a clean image that’s devoid of any photobombers. Check out editing process in the screen recording below:
For our second example, you just want to take a nice photo of your dog–however, you don’t have time to clean up all the clutter surrounding your furry friend. No matter how many and how small some of the clutter is in the image, AI Eraser has you covered.
For this one, we used the Smart Lasso tool, where you circle through objects and let the Reno12 5G take care of detecting which objects you want to be removed. We removed several dead leaves in the background, and the Reno12 5G was able to do a decent job without needing to do a second pass. It took less than 10 seconds to remove the details we encircled–which is relatively impressive considering that the Reno12 5G is a mid-range phone.

Now if you want more freedom in editing, you can go for the Paint Over mode. This one is straightforward, as you simply swipe over the object you want removed from your image.
For this photo of a sleeping Dalmatian, we just painted over the large leaf. AI Eraser took a while to remove the said object because of the size, and we had to do another pass to get a clean output–which is forgivable since removing larger objects can be challenging. We also tried Paint Over to remove a tiny detail in the image, and that one rendered faster.
Despite the size of the object that we want out of the picture, AI Eraser still got the job done. Check out the editing process in the screen recording below:
What’s impressive about AI Eraser is that all of these clean edits are made possible using the Reno12 5G’s Dimensity 7300 processor, which has an NPU that offers double the performance of the previous-generation Dimensity 7050. The clean outputs we got using AI Eraser best showcase the potential of the Reno12 5G when it comes to AI-related tasks.
