Another year, another Unpacked: Samsung continues to push for foldable perfection with the Galaxy Z Fold5, further refining on everything that’s good with last year’s Galaxy Z Fold4.
While the Galaxy Z Fold5 looks similar to the Z Fold4, the biggest (and most noticeable) change is the hinge, which Samsung redesigned it to give it a gapless design when folded–similar to that of the Z Flip5.
Aside from that slight design change, you are getting a more powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor that’s paired with 12GB LPDDR5X storage and up to 1TB of faster UFS 4.0 storage. Save for those changes, the hardware on the Galaxy Z Fold5 is similar to its predecessor. These include a 6.2-inch outer display with a punch-hole for a 10-megapixel selfie shooter, a 7.6-inch foldable inner display with a 4-megapixel under-display camera, and a 4400mAh battery with support for 25w wired and 15w wireless charging.
The Galaxy Z Fold5 also inherited the excellent rear camera setup of its predecessor, which consists of a 50-megapixel main camera with OIS, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS.
While the Galaxy Z Fold5 is an incremental upgrade at best, it is proof that Samsung already has a great flagship foldable with last year’s Z Fold4–and that minor tweaks are needed in order to further cement its status as the foldable phone (that’s available globally and not limited to China) to beat.
