When talking about midrange phones, Samsung’s Galaxy A5x series is hard to ignore, even though recent models use an Exynos processor. You can hate the Galaxy A5x series, but remember that the Galaxy A54 was the second best-selling Android phone globally in 2023, and the Galaxy A55 is good for its price. While we’re waiting for details about the Galaxy A56, we know more or less the processor that will power it—the Exynos 1580.
Samsung’s new midrange chip is made on a 4nm EUV node and features a 1/3/4 CPU architecture that consists of a Cortex-A720 core that runs at 2.9Ghz, three Cortex-A720 cores running at 2.6Ghz, and four Cortex-A520 cores running at 1.95Ghz. All cores use ARMv9 architecture, which should present performance improvements over the ARMv8 architecture used on the Exynos 1480.
The Xclipse 940 GPU is based on AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture that features two Work Group processors. Samsung claims performance is better than the Exynos 1480 by 37% while being 20% more power efficient. You also get a dedicated NPU that offers 14.7 TOPS, which is higher than the 4.9 TOPS that the Exynos 1480 offered.
You also get support for LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage, along with up to a 200-megapixel single camera and up to 4K60 video recording. For displays, the Exynos 1580 supports Full HD+ displays at 144hz, along with support for Bluetooth 5.4 and WiFi 6e.
Aside from the processor, recent reports state that the Galaxy A56 will get a new selfie camera. Samsung is expected to unveil it after the Galaxy S25 series, so stay tuned in the coming months for more details on the upcoming Galaxy A56.
