If you’ve been disappointed with the PlayStation Portal since it needs a PlayStation 5 in order to run games remotely, Sony is not yet ditching the idea of a true portable gaming handheld. A new report from Bloomberg suggest that Sony is working on a proper successor to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) that can natively run PlayStation 5 titles.
What makes this rumor exciting is that the upcoming PlayStation handheld will not need an active internet connection, making it a true gaming handheld that can compete with the likes of the Nintendo Switch. Before you do get excited, the rumored PlayStation handheld is “years away” from launch since it is in the early days of development, so Sony may pull the plug on the project.
Sony’s renewed push for an actual PlayStation 5 handheld makes sense especially with the resurgence of gaming handhelds in the past few years. Aside from the Steam Deck, notable ones include ASUS’ ROG Ally and Lenovo’s Legion Go. Aside from the three, there are other gaming handhelds in the market like MSI’s Claw A1M and Zotac ZONE Gaming Handheld.
ASUS has their upgraded ROG Ally X, while Microsoft is looking to develop an XBox handheld.
