The PlayStation Portal will Let You Stream Your PS5 Games

After announcing Project Q as a “companion to your PlayStation 5“, Sony has officially revealed it as the PlayStation Portal, which is a handheld device that lets you stream all your PlayStation 5 games via WiFi through an 8-inch LCD display at 1080p resolution, 60FPS. Sony said that the PlayStation Portal will be available later this year at $200(~Php 12k).

“PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal,” Sony Interactive Entertainment Senior Vice President of Platform Experience Hideaki Nishino said. “PlayStation Portal can play supported games that are installed on your PS5 console and use the Dualsense controller.”

Taking the same design cues as the PlayStation 5 DualSense Controllers, you get adaptive triggers and haptic feedback on the PlayStation Portal, so it will work and feel like those controllers. Aside from games, it can also play media by mirroring content that’s found on your PlayStation 5.

If the idea of having a companion device for streaming PlayStation 5 games is strange, what makes the PlayStation Portal even stranger is that it will now work with Sony’s cloud streaming service for PlayStation 5 games–something we hope Sony corrects in the future. Since it depends on WiFi, you need at least a 5Mbps connection–but Sony recommends 15Mbps for the best experience.
