Sony knows how to make the holidays exciting for gamers, as it has officially unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro as the much-awaited update to its current console. While it has the same design as the updated PlayStation 5 with its detachable optical drive, the new console distinguishes itself with three stripes running through its case.
So what’s new with the PlayStation 5 Pro? For starters, you’re getting an upgraded GPU, which Sony promises 45% faster rendering of games compared to the regular PlayStation 5 with 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory. You’re also getting hardware accelerated ray tracing, and Sony is confidently claiming that the PlayStation 5 Pro’s GPU can cast rays at double and even triple the rate on the regular PlayStation 5’s GPU.
Just like with practically every new gadget announced this year, the PlayStation 5 Pro is getting some AI tricks with Sony’s in-house AI-driven image upscaling solution called Spectral Super Resolution. Sony’s own approach is expected to be better than AMD’s FSR tech and at par with NVIDIA’s DLSS or Intel’s XeSS.
As for overall performance, Sony added a performance and quality toggle, where gamers can choose between high frame rates or better image quality.
Other quality of life upgrades include having a 2TB SSD as standard, along with support for WiFi 7 and support for variable refresh rate (VRR) and 8K displays. Sony is also adding a Game Boost feature, which can be applied to over 8500 PlayStation 4 titles and boost their resolution and frame rate. Native games optimized for the new console will have a “PlayStation 5 Pro Enchanced” label.
The PlayStation 5 Pro has an official SRP of $699 or around Php 40k when converted, and will officially launch on November 7–just in time for Christmas
