The iPhone 15 Pro Cameras are Still Better than the Pixel 8 Pro

Prior to its launch a few weeks ago that omits the Philippines once again, Google has been cocky with Apple in proclaiming that its Pixel 8 Pro will be better than the titanium-clad iPhone 15 Pro. While they did prove a point by having the best display on a smartphone, the Pixel 8 Pro trails behind the iPhone 15 Pro when it comes to cameras. And that’s despite Google going in with AI and computational photography to flex its camera prowess.

DxOMark recently finished its camera review of the Pixel 8 Pro. With a score of 153, the Pixel 8 Pro is a point behind both the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro. This makes the battle between Google and Apple even: While the Pixel 8 Pro claims the best display, the iPhone 15 Pro has better cameras overall.

Looking through their scores side-by-side, the Pixel 8 Pro did outperform the iPhone 15 Pro in photo and zoom, which is expected given Google’s expertise in computational photography for all of its Pixel phones–and the fact that the Pixel 8 Pro has a higher resolution sensor for the telephoto camera. Even if we compare the Pixel 8 Pro’s 5x optical zoom with the same focal length used on the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s new periscope camera, the Pixel 8 Pro still has a better overall performance when it comes to zoom performance.

However, what the iPhone 15 Pro does great is video and bokeh. Many Android brands try to replicate Apple’s algorithm for its Portrait Mode on its iPhones, but no one has come close to it. The Portrait Mode of iPhones is still the best on any smartphone.

There’s also a big factor with video performance: even if the iPhone 15 Pro can’t shoot 8K video like most premium flagship Android phones, they still are superior with their ability to shoot in ProRes and HDR with Dolby Vision. Those are valid reasons why iPhones are used for a number of short films–and even a popular KPop music video.

Of course, we will still be more inclined with the iPhone 15 Pro over the Pixel 8 Pro: even if it is very expensive, the entire iPhone 15 series is officially sold in the Philippines unlike any of Google’s Pixel products.
