Pixel 8 & Pixel 8 Pro: The Kings of Smartphone Screens

Google’s new Pixel 8 and its more advanced sibling, the Pixel 8 Pro, have been hailed as having the best display of any smartphone on the market. The two devices, which were released in select regions last October 12, topped DxOMark’s display ranking after ending up with a matching score of 154. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold5, the previous crown holder, was two points behind.

DxOMark gave both new Pixel 8 phones high scores for color, proclaiming the Pixel 8 Pro with its 6.7-inch 1344p by 2992p LTPO OLED panel as offering “class-leading performance” in the category despite it showing a slight yellow-green cast outdoors.

Meanwhile, the base Pixel 8, which has a slightly smaller 6.2-inch 1080p by 2400p OLED screen, “provided very pleasant colors and especially good skin tone rendering.” It still, however, showed a slight pink cast outdoors in certain conditions, according to DxOMark.

In addition to color, DXOMARK also gave both Pixels top marks when it comes to readability, dubbing the Pixel 8 Pro as “the most readable product in our database to date.” In a head-to-head comparison against the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max’s similarly sized Super Retina XDR display, the Pixel 8 Pro’s screen achieved better results when showing a web page, with the latter losing only 20% of its brightness while the former lost 50%.

The Pixel 8 Pro has a marketed max brightness of 2,400 nits, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max peaks at 2,000 nits. Google’s base Pixel 8, sporting a slightly smaller 6.2-inch panel, has a max brightness of 2,000 nits. But despite sharing the same max brightness levels as the iPhone, the Pixel 8 only suffered a 7% brightness drop when viewing web pages compared to its competition, the results showed.

When it comes to video and touch, both Pixel 8 phones still received high scores in testing. They also did above average in the motion and artifacts tests but were soundly beaten by their peers in those categories. The base Pixel 8 goes on sale for $699 or about Php 39,700, while the cheapest configuration of the Pixel 8 Pro is priced at $999 (Php 56,700).

There’s still no official word on whether or not the two devices will launch locally. The last Google phone that was officially sold in the Philippines was the Nexus 6P from 2015.
