The Xiaomi 200w Charging Solution Might Be a Reality Soon

Remember when Xiaomi went on to flex its insane 200w HyperCharge charging solution last May? While there is much debate about whether charging at such speeds is still good especially with the tradeoff of shorter battery lifespans, there’s no denying that companies are finding ways to make it work.

Xiaomi did not reveal much about its 200w charging solution save for a custom-built Mi 11 Pro, but a chip from semiconductor company NuVolta might be the exact custom solution Xiaomi used. The chip in question is called the NU2205, and is described as a second-generation pump fast-charging chip.

What makes NuVolta’s chip unique is that it is the first of its kind to have a dual-cell 4:2 pump fast-charging architecture, which lets it push for 200w by charging through two cells at 100w. Aside from that, NuVolta claims that under the condition of 25°C in ambient temperature and with a 16v input, 2 batteries can be charged at 10A and 20A currents. As for the temperature rise, NuVolta’s solution peaks at around 44.9°C and 46.8°C respectively.

Interestingly, NuVolta used what appears to be a Mi 11 Pro in the images of the NU2205, further corroborating that this might the the chip Xiaomi used to showcase its 200w HyperCharge solution last May.

To recap, Xiaomi’s insane charging solution can top up a 4000mAh cell from flat to 100% in 8 minutes via a wired 200w connection and 15 minutes via a wireless 120w connection. Now that we know a few details about the wired charging part, we will wait for further developments as to how Xiaomi actually reached 120w with a wireless solution.

Still, we are curious to know whether Xiaomi was able to address battery longevity issues associated with very fast charging speeds. Once that gets addressed, we might finally see charging speeds of over 100w become the main feature for flagship phones in the future.
