There Will Only be One iMac Variant (For Now)

Ever since Apple transitioned to its own processors, the iMac is only offered in a 24-inch model. People were hoping that the M3 update for the iMac would introduce a bigger 27-inch version, but things remained the same. So will there be a 27-inch variant of the new iMac? Apple themselves confirmed to The Verge that it is not happening.

Apple PR representative Starlayne Meza explained to The Verge that the new iMac will only have the 24-inch variant, and those looking for a bigger display can opt to get the expensive Studio Display and pair it with a Mac Studio or Mac Mini. Based on what The Verge was told, it seems that Apple has no plans to release a bigger iMac variant with its in-house processor. This also gives the impression that Apple wants to market the iMac as a consumer AIO.

We can also speculate that Apple wants to keep a more streamlined lineup of Macs: sales of its laptop and desktop computers are down 34% YoY in Q4 2023 as reported in its 2023 earnings call. The report also revealed that this is the fourth consecutive quarter where Mac sales are on a decline.

The last time Apple had good sales for Macs was in Q4 of 2022 when it launched the M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pros and the Mac Studio. Perhaps that’s also the reason why Apple decided to kill off the Touchbar MacBook Pro for good.

Despite that statement from Apple, the doors for a bigger iMac are not yet closed: analyst Ming-Chi Kuo does predict that a 32-inch iMac – one with a Mini LED display – might eventually arrive in 2025. Kuo predicted that the 24-inch iMac refresh was supposed to happen in 2024, but Apple decided to launch it last October 30. There’s not much update about the rumored 32-inch iMac, but we’re keeping our hopes up that Apple will eventually launch them.
