Even older devices getting KitKat updates soon!

We managed to talk to Steven Han, Tinno Mobile Technology Corp’s Country Manager in the Philippines about their partnership with MyPhone. Tinno is the hardware manufacturer partner of Myphone, meaning that they are the ones who actually produce the smartphones that MyPhone sells – not Micromax, not anybody else. Anyway, we got to talking and he had some very good news for MyPhone owners – they will be releasing a KitKat OTA update for a majority of MyPhone’s products. Yes, you read that right – a large swath of MyPhone’s products will be getting KitKat in about a month, although he did not specify exactly what models are getting the update. This piece of good news has been confirmed by a MyPhone executive present during the event, but declined to speak on the record. This is good news not just for MyPhone users but for people who bought other brands as well, since it means that MediaTek has gone ahead and released the code for KitKat to OEM manufacturers already. Up till now all we have heard of getting the KitKat update is MediaTek’s high end 1.7GHz octa-core SoC.
Steven also teased that they will also be releasing their first ever quad-core, LTE smartphone based on MediaTek’s SoC in the next two months, which MyPhone will release as soon as it’s available. This jives with MediaTek’s production schedule for the quad-core LTE SoC they announced during MWC. Because the yet unnamed LTE powered smartphone uses MediaTek’s SoC, you can expect this smartphone to cost less than the first ever LTE smartphone offered by a local brand, the Cherry Mobile W900 LTE (when it first came out). Just how much will it be? We’re expecting it to be less than 10K when it arrives.
